The Swiss cheese plant is a liane from Panama and southern Mexico, where it climbs up to 20m (65ft) high. The leaves of a young plant are heart-shaped. When the liane is grown in a light and not too dry spot, the new leaves will get deeply cleft margins. In ideal circumstances the leaves will get bigger and develop oval holes. Monstera is an easy house plant which will grow in the semi-shade and tolerates dry air reasonably well. If the leaves become dull they can be made shiny again by wiping them with a cloth dipped in buttermilk, if available, or proprietory leaf gloss. A light, humid location out of the sun is ideal. Water liberally in summer, with hand-warm water and regularly add some liquid fertilizer. Water less in winter.
